Expedio
Merchants who leave Magento for Shopify usually leave for a faster storefront. scandiweb built Expedio so they can have that speed on the store they already run.
Shopify storefronts are known for being fast, and much of that comes from how Shopify themes turn data into a page. Expedio brings that approach to Magento. It is built on Liquid, the open-source template language created by Shopify’s co-founder and used in Shopify themes.
The store stays on Magento, with its catalog, checkout, admin and the flexibility that made the merchant choose it. What changes is how the server builds each page, and that is where the time goes.
If speed is making you consider Shopify, upgrade Magento first.
A page reaches a shopper in two halves. First the server builds the HTML and sends its first byte. Then the browser draws the page. Hyvä and other modern themes shortened the second half, and on stores running them we see good largest paint times once the HTML arrives.
1. Time to first byte
Every request waits here first. This is where Magento is still slow.
Expedio makes this half faster2. First byte to largest paint
Largely solved by modern Magento themes.
Hyvä makes this half fasterThe first half is where Magento is still slow, and it is measurable. In Chrome’s real-user data, 22% of Magento sites meet Google’s “good” time to first byte, against 82 to 92% of Shopify sites.
Share of sites that meet Google’s “good” time to first byte of 800 ms. Chrome real-user data, HTTP Archive, August 2026.
It matches what we see across the Magento stores we run. A typical page takes around a second before the browser receives anything.
Hyvä made the Magento frontend fast. Expedio works one layer deeper, in the server-side work that generates the page beneath the theme. The same Hyvä theme stays, the same Luma stays, and both answer faster, without reinventing the storefront.
Keeping the storefront design still means adapting the templates underneath it, and Expedio removes every reasonable inefficiency it finds there. Custom themes and the extensions they touch need implementation and testing, which Expedio by scandiweb covers.
Much of Magento’s slowness comes from hosting, such as CPU speed, storage and how its services are configured. The benchmark ran on ReadyMage, scandiweb’s Magento hosting, with high-frequency CPUs, low-latency storage, and the database, search and cache on the same machine. That is the baseline Expedio is measured against.
The Expedio core is open source. Any merchant, developer or agency can take it and run it on their own store for free. scandiweb earns from what comes around it, which is product support and version updates, expert reviews, and implementations with the performance result written into the contract. Ari is one more way in, installing Expedio from a message in chat.
Expedio comes from scandiweb, the eCommerce agency that also built Ari, and from years of work on Magento at platform level. Aleksandrs Mokans, Solutions Architect and Team Lead at scandiweb, is the engineer behind it.
scandiweb.com ↗Magento should be fast on its own, not because a cache happened to hold the page. Every page in milliseconds, for every visitor, every time.
