Expedio works under your theme, in the server-side work that generates each page. It is built on Liquid, the open-source template language created by Shopify’s co-founder and used in Shopify themes, so your Hyvä or Luma storefront stays as it is and answers faster. The benchmark
scandiweb ran one real merchant’s store twice on the same server, once as it runs today and once on Expedio, with no page cache in front of either. 162 runs and 487,115 requests went into the figures below.

Questions
What is the difference between Expedio and Hyvä?
They speed up different halves of loading a page. First your server builds the page and starts sending it. That wait is the time to first byte, and Expedio makes it shorter. Then the shopper’s browser turns the page into something they can see and use, and Hyvä makes that faster. Hyvä is the frontend, Expedio works under it, and a store can run both.
Does Expedio only work with Hyvä?
No. Expedio works under the theme, so it speeds up a store on Hyvä, Luma or a custom theme. Custom themes and the extensions they touch need their templates adapted and tested.
Which Magento versions does Expedio work with?
Magento 2, including Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce and Adobe Commerce Cloud. It does not work with Magento 1.
Is Expedio open source?
Yes. The core of Expedio is free and open source for the Magento community. The paid packages add product support, version updates, an expert review, or a full implementation by scandiweb.
Do I need to change my hosting?
No. Expedio works with any Magento hosting.
What changes for my team?
Nothing they work with. The admin, catalog, prices, checkout, orders and the storefront design stay as they are.
